NHHC Photo Archives Update (September 2015):
The Naval History and Heritage Command’s Photo Archives have nearly completed the lengthy processing and digitization of historic Navy photographs within their collection. Most of the Navy’s historical images are now available in high resolution digital format on the NHHC website. All images are believed to be in the Public Domain and are subsequently free to download. NHHC Photo Archivists strongly urge the use of their search function for these images. You can also search for photographs by photo number or subject matter. To go to the historic photographs homepage for the Naval History and Heritage Command, click HERE.
As a result of the upcoming completion of the photograph digitization project, NHF will no longer offer digital scanning services for photographs, though we may be able to do so under special circumstances. For questions involving high resolution scanning of photographs off the NHHC website or in the Naval Subject Collection, please contact NHHC Photo Archives.
Naval Subject Collection and On-Site Research at the Washington Navy Yard:
The Photo Archives Naval Subject Collection (photos generally organized by subject but without official “NH” numbers yet assigned) is available for researchers to visit at the Washington Navy Yard by appointment. To make arrangements for a visitor for general questions regarding historic Navy photos, please contact NHHC Photo Archives or call 202-433-2765.
Photo Reproduction Services:
Outside of online digital download, the Naval Historical Foundation will continue to reproduce print copies of historic Navy images for customers to purchase for their own personal use. Please email the Naval Historical Foundation with the image number from the NHHC website you would like to be reproduced for purchase. Customers are also encouraged to check the U.S. Naval Institute’s photo collection at photos.usni.org/.
Please contact staff members from the NHHC Photo Archives from the contact information listed above to determine if there are any other options they can help you with. For all other questions, we will be more than happy to assist you.
