ARRT Meeting: The Rhode Island Campaign – The First French and American Operation of the Revolutionary War
March 7, 2012 @ 6:00 pm - 9:15 pm
Please join the American Revolution Round Table of the District of Columbia (ARRT-DC) for their 7 March 2012 meeting.
The program will be presented by ARRT-DC member Christian M. McBurney, author of The Rhode Island Campaign: The First French and American Operation of the Revolutionary War, published in September 2011 by Westholme. It is one of the lesser known, yet significant, campaigns of the War for Independence. The speaker will address themes from his book, which is a detailed history of the French and American joint operation in 1778 to try to capture Newport when the town was occupied by a British army. Mr. McBurney’s book ends with a complete description of the 1778 ‘Battle of Rhode Island’. Participants included the Count D’Estaing, Lafayette, Nathaniel Greene, Paul Revere, John Hancock and John Sullivan. This book is the first major work on this topic in more than 100 years. Dennis Conrad, editor of the “Naval Documents of the American Revolution” and “Papers of General Nathaniel Greene,” has reviewed Mr. McBurney’s The Rhode Island Campaign and wrote that the book provides “a fresh, nuance, and compelling reinterpretation of the United States’ first joint operation. Moreover, [the author] does it with readable style. This work will be the standard for years to come.”
Mr. McBurney will be happy to sign copies of his book following the presentation.
