Donating Art, Artifacts, Photos, Manuscripts and Personal Papers

The Naval Historical Foundation facilitates the donation of historically significant naval items to repositories around the country. Working primarily with the Navy's collections at the Naval Historical Center, the Foundation also assists in placing donations with the Library of Congress, the National Archives, and other federal and private museum collections. Please contact the Foundation at the email and phone number listed below to discuss possible donations. In general, unlabeled photographs, ships plaques, and ball caps are not desired by most collections. Manuscripts and personal papers are a special category and amplifying information may be found at www.history.navy.mil/faqs/faq87-1.htm. The Foundation can assist in transporting potential donations to our offices for evaluation. We will acknowledge receipt of the donated items, pass them to the appropriate repository, and that repository will send a donation form to the donor. We do not have the capability to appraise the value of donated items.
