Details: Harold Lee Wise, an adjunct professor at Elizabeth City State University and author of Inside the Danger Zone will discuss the 1987-1988 period in the Persian Gulf when a planned tanker escort mission became a naval quasi-war between the United States and Iran. The talk will include a discussion of U.S. motives for the increased military presence in 1987, the Iraqi missile attack on USS Stark, and the slowly escalating conflict with Iran that culminated in Operation Praying Mantis, the largest sea-air battle for the U.S. Navy since World War II. Wise will also talk about the lessons the period holds for present and future Gulf operations. He will be available to autograph copies of his book.
