In 2012, Operation Sail will once again bring the glory of tall ships to the American seaboard to celebrate the bicentennial of our nation anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner.
The battle between the USS Chesapeake and the HMS Shannon took place outside of Boston Harbor on June 1, 1813. Almost fifteen minutes after the battle ensued, the British overtook the USS Chesapeake. Captain James Lawrence, captain of the USS Chesapeake, was taken below deck after being wounded, and shouted the famous line “Don’t give up the ship!”
