The National Maritime Historical Society’s Distinguished Service Award will be presented to three worthy recipients:
● Admiral Bruce DeMars, USN (Ret.) has actively promoted the important history of America’s Navy. He is a submariner who, in a career of over forty years, rose to become the four-star Director of the Navy’s Nuclear Propulsion Program. As Chairman of the Naval Historical Foundation Admiral DeMars has used his expertise to support the Navy’s Cold War Museum in the Washington Navy Yard and partnered with organizations around the country to tell the Navy’s story. The award will be presented by Senator Christopher J. Dodd.
● Bruce K. Farr OBE is Director and Vice President of Farr Yacht Design, Ltd. of Annapolis, and is acknowledged as one of the top racing yacht designers in the world. Rowe Price, owner of Chessie Racing and other Farr yachts, will make the presentation.
● Patrick O’Brien is one of America’s outstanding maritime artists, who uses his remarkable ability to capture the age of sail by painting all the sea battles of the War of 1812, helping to bring to life the story of the War of 1812 and the age of sail. He is a Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists. Charles Raskob Robinson of the American Society of Marine Artists (ASMA), and its former president, will present the award.
Gary Jobson, distinguished yachtsman, commentator, author, and President of US Sailing, the governing body of competitive sailing in the United States, will be Master of Ceremonies.
David Hildebrand, Director of The Colonial Music Institute, and his wife Ginger, who specialize in interpretation of early American music, will perform an 1814-era version of “The Star-Spangled Banner” and 1812-era songs.
The Washington Awards Dinner Art Gallery will feature original art works from Tim Bell, Marc Castelli, John Barber, and Patrick O’Brien. Purchase of the art will help support the Society, as will proceeds from the evening’s Silent Auction.
