Join author and historian Richard Zacks for a presentation featuring his real-life thriller The Pirate Coast, the true story of William Eaton and his secret mission to overthrow the government of Tripoli in an attempt to stop the legendary Barbary Pirates of North Africa from hijacking American ships. The operation was sanctioned by President Thomas Jefferson, who at the last moment grew wary of “intermeddling” in a foreign government and sent Eaton off without proper national support. Short on supplies, given very little money and only a few men, Eaton nevertheless triumphed against all odds, laying the groundwork for the demise of the Barbary Pirates in America’s first overseas covert op.

Please contact the National Maritime Historical Society at 914-737-7878, ext. 0, if you plan to attend. Or you may RSVP to nmhs@seahistory.org.

Coffee is at 10:30 AM. Presentation is at 11:00 AM.
A $5 donation is appreciated.

Afterwards, lunch at The Cove. Cost for lunch per person is $20, prepaid, and includes coffee, soft drinks, and dessert. Cash bar. Please make your reservation before 26 January.
