Author on Deck Lecture – Intrepid Sailors: The Legacy of Preble’s Boys and the Tripoli Campaign
November 27, 2012 @ 12:00 pm
As part of the United States Navy Memorial’s Authors on Deck book lecture series, author Chipp Reid will present his latest work, Intrepid Sailors: The Legacy of Preble’s Boys and the Tripoli Campaign. (Naval Institute Press; October 9, 2012). Intrepid Sailors tells the story of Commodore Edward Preble and the legendary efforts of “Preble’s Boys” to subdue the pirate leader of Tripoli, who declared war on the United States in 1801.
In Intrepid Sailors, Reid tells one of the greatest sea stories in naval history, that of the U.S. Navy’s campaign against the Barbary pirates. To cull myth from fact, Reid uses the words of the men in the campaign – Preble, Stephen Decatur, Richard Somers, Charles Steward and James Lawrence – to tell the narrative. From the daring raid to burn the captured American frigate Philadelphia to the escape attempts of American prisoners and eventual loss of Intrepid, his book offers insights into the lives of these early American naval officers, heroes who come to life in this entertaining history.
Following his presentation, Reid will be available for a Q&A session and book signing.
