Association for Great Lakes Maritime History – 2013 Conference
September 13, 2013 - September 14, 2013
Beginning with a reception on Thursday evening, plans for this year’s conference include an opportunity to visit a number of sites on historic Mackinac Island which was the site of one of the earliest battles of the War of 1812 on the Great Lakes. In addition to its capture by British forces at the start of the conflict, following the Siege of Fort Mackinac, the island was also the site of one of the first setbacks for American forces following their naval victory at the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813.
The program portion of the conference will again include a wide range of both local and regional maritime history presentations including speakers on Great Lakes shipwrecks. The event will culminate with the Association’s Annual Dinner which includes the presentation of the 2013 Henry N. Barkhausen Award for Original Research in Great Lakes Maritime History, the Joyce S. Hayward Award for Historic Interpretation, and the Association for Great Lakes Maritime History’s Award for Historic Preservation.
