Ship Dictionary Now On Line!
18 November 2004
Dr. Dave Winkler

The Navy's authoritative "Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships" is now available in an on line version due to a generous grant from NHF chairman Adm. James L. Holloway III, USN (Ret.) and hard work by the Naval Historical Center’s Naval Warfare Division. Nicknamed DANFS, individual ship entries in the eight volume collection will be routinely updated on line rather than waiting for a full volume to be published. This makes a great naval history resource readily accessible to hundreds of thousands of Navy veterans and the general public. You can find DANFS on the Naval Historical Center web site at www.history.navy.mil. It is easily searched, and there are instructions for providing feedback to Center's historians for future updates.
